Composition: Each
tablet contains Buckwheat extract 300mg Action:
Buckwheat extract fed prior to sugar-containing
meal will reduce the rise in blood glucose by 12-19%, at least
in STZ rats bred to develop type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes,
which were treated with insulin. The important constituent
is believed to be D-chiro-inositol. It is understood that
in the body D-chiro-inositol or a derivative might act as
a secondary messenger in several metabolic processes including
blood sugar control. Several animal and human studies have
shown that D-chiro-inositol has a positive effect on glucose
metabolism. In the fed STZ rats, both doses of the buckwheat
extract (containing 10 and 20mg of D-chiro-inositol per kg
of body weight) were effective in lowering serum glucose concentrations
by 12% to 19% at 90 and 120 minutes after administration.
D-Chiro-inositol is a component of an insulin mediator. This
substance while present in high amounts in buckwheat is found
but rarely in other foods. The findings from this study demonstrate
buckwheat extract is an effective source of D-chiro-inositol
and therefore it may be useful in the future treatment of
diabetes. Rutin and quercetin
in Buckwheat extract also have the inhibitory effect on amylase
activity, so it can also reduce the absorbtion of glucose.
