Composition:
Each softgel contains 1000mg evening
primrose oil (9% gamma-linolenic acid) Action:
Evening primrose oil contains substantial
amounts of polysaturated omega-6 fatty acids, essential fatty
acids (EFAs) which are needed by the body to regulate a number
of activities including insulin utilization, heart function,
and mood. The oil contains 74 percent linolenic acid (LA)
and 8-10 percent gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Under ideal conditions,
the body uses LA to produce GLA. In turn, GLA is used to produce
beneficial hormone-like compounds called prostaglandins. Specifically,
GLA is used to produce series one prostaglandins such as prostaglandin
E1 (PGE1). Prostaglandins affect the function of virtually
every system in the body. These molecules are used in the
regulation of inflammation, pain, blood pressure, fluid balance,
and blood clotting. Prostaglandins also affect hormone production
and function.
GLA, a very valuable fatty acid that
is not found in many plants has numerous vital functions in
the body. GLA is an essential fatty acid that the body does
not manufacture. This fatty acid is known to help prevent
hardening of the arteries, heart disease, eczema, cirrhosis,
rheumatoid arthritis, menopause, PMS, multiple sclerosis,
and high blood pressure. It has a positive effect on sex hormone
response including the hormones estrogen and testosterone,
aids in lowering cholesterol levels, and is important in treating
cirrhosis of the liver. Research also demonstrates that primrose
oil helps relieve pain and inflammation. The oil also has
a positive effect on the uterine muscles, nervous system and
metabolism.
Evening primrose oil may also help
to relieve pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), symptoms of menopause,
and breast pain due to hormonal changes during menstruation.
Supplementary GLA, such as is supplied by evening primrose
oil, appears to relieve some PMS symptoms.
Evening primrose oil is an oil rich
in essential fatty acids ‹ polyunsaturated fats that
are as essential as vitamins and minerals for the maintenance
of good health. Supplementing with evening primrose oil can
enrich the body’s GLA supply and restore the production
of beneficial prostaglandins derived from GLA.
